Model Behavior With Sharon Quinn: Curvy Accomplishments in 2009 and a Call to Arms for 2010!, 12/01/2009
Meet Sharon Quinn
As the year 2009 approaches its end I thought this would be a great
time to look back on the many curvy accomplishments this year and the
interesting ways we reacted to our plus sized peers successes and/or
2009 was most definitely a good year to be a big girl! Full figured
women around the globe made history across the board! Comedienne,
actress & talk show host Mo'Nique has had a stellar year!
Although her popular radio show was cancelled earlier this year, home
girl came back hard and heavy! She announced to the world via The
Oprah Winfrey Show that she has a brand new fragrance that she's
launching soon and she's wowed pretty much everyone with her star turn
in Precious. She walked away from the Sundance Film Festival with
the Special Jury Prize for her performance as Mary Jones in the
film. Hollywood insiders believe that she is a shoo-in an Academy
Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She made a
commitment to herself to embrace a healthier lifestyle and lost a
whopping 40 pounds and made history this year on October 5th when she
became the first black woman to host a late night talk show. This
move made her the highest paid entertainer in the history of BET.
Mo'Nique Show boasts a live band, big boy sidekick comedian Rodney
Perry and marked the return of the curvaceous Mo'Nique dancers, who
were last seen on Mo'Nique's F.A.T. Chance.
With the debut of BET's Pay It Off, curvy comedienne/actress Kim Coles
made history by becoming the first black woman to host a televised game
show. Kim firmly cemented her place in history by hosting the first
ever Full Figured Fashion Week festivities this summer in New York City.
Sherri Shepherd not only holds it down daily as a co-host on ABC TV's
The View, she also has launched her own sitcom simply titled Sherri on
the Lifetime network. The show debuted to huge ratings, glowing
reviews and broke records as the highest rated comedy debut in the
history of the network! You GO Girl! Imagine my surprise when I
finally met her in person earlier this year and she told me she was a
fan of my blogs!
Full figured & fabulous newcomer Gabourey Sidibe has been living
her dreams and burning up red carpets all over the world promoting her
film debut in the Lee Daniels highly touted (and Oprah Winfrey/Tyler
Perry backed) flick Precious based on the novel PUSH by Sapphire.
The plus sized diva's name is also on the fast track to a Best Actress
Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the lead character Precious
Jones. Kudos to her for ignoring the haters, loving herself and
showing the world that you don't have to be a size 4 to have a
successful career in Hollywood.
Full Figured Fashion Week 2009 This very necessary 3-day event was
conceived and created by DeVoe Signature Events CEO Gwen DeVoe, was
held in July in New York City. The curvy alternative to NYC's Fashion
Week (which has consistently excluded plus sizes since its inception)
opened to positive reviews and set industry tongues wagging about the
gross misconceptions in fashion and body image. A highlight of
the event included the standing room only audience at the State of the
Curvy Community Panel Discussion conceived by newcomer Marie Denee and
the Curvy Collective. I was honored to be the moderator for the panel
which included Hairspray movie star Nikki Blonsky, celebrity stylist
Susan Moses, Deb Malkin, owner of the plus sized vintage boutique
Re-Dress NYC, Full Figure Network Inc's Glen Johnson & Cassy
Jones-McBride and Plus Model Magazine's Editor-in Chief Madeline
Figueroa-Jones & Editor-At-Large Mia Amber Davis.
Attorney, former F.A.T. (Fabulous and Thick) chick & The View
co-host Star Jones sat on Oprah's couch and finally came clean about
her difficult weight loss journey via gastric bypass surgery.
Although her Court TV talk show was cancelled, she hasn't let that stop
her and she has become a champion for the cause of helping her people
get on the fast track to a healthier lifestyle. Now Jones, who
has lost a staggering 160 pounds, is using her knowledge about obesity
and weight loss in an attempt to help residents of Jackson,
Mississippi, the US's largest population of African-Americans and also
the state that annually weighs in as America's fattest as she hosted
Heart of the City: Dying to Eat in Jackson, which premiered on Black
Entertainment Television on November 15.
Voluptuous vocalist Angie Stone released a new album titled Unexpected
and shows off her brand new curves on her album cover. Personally
I was very happy to see her full body on her CD cover rather than the ¾
close up shot most record companies choose to use when they are
promoting plus sized vocalists. Former Sounds of Blackness lead
vocalist, Ann Nesby gave us a new inspirational CD with The Lula Lee
Project. 2009 Grammy Award winner (Best Urban/Alternative
Performance) Chrisette Michele along with fellow curvy gals (and
American Idol alums) Kelly Clarkson, Melinda Doolittle, LaKisha Jones,
Mandisa Hundley (who has lost 80 pounds) & The Velvet Teddy Bear,
Ruben Studdard have also released new albums this year. I wonder if
American Idol's Simon Cowell had Mandisa in the back of his mind when
he altered his way of "style over substance" thinking when by
personally backing Britain's Got Talent runner up Susan Boyle after
hearing her sing. Girlfriend went on to break Amazon.com records
for the most pre-orders of her debut album in history!
